He sees California Forever. And if he can't undo the damage, there may never be a California Forever. California Forever may be a subdivision, but it's precisely the kind of subdivision America needs right now. But here's the thing: California Forever may be a subdivision, but it's precisely the kind of subdivision America needs right now. Places like California Forever aren't being opposed by the people who are desperate for a place to live.

Opinion | Should Historic Buildings Give Way to New Housing?
  + stars: | 2024-01-21 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
New York City needs more, not less, historical memory. Mr. Appelbaum writes that much of Brooklyn Heights has been fossilized. There’s no other place like Brooklyn Heights in the United States. We mustn’t sacrifice what makes New York unique and beautiful simply for new buildings and for uncreative solutions to pressing housing problems. We have lots of unused commercial and industrial buildings in the city that can be converted to housing.

THE WORLD IN A WINEGLASS: The Insider’s Guide to Artisanal, Sustainable, Extraordinary Wines to Drink Now, by Ray IsleWinery owners appear to lead charmed lives. So, too, do wine writers and critics, if their small talk and Instagram feeds can be believed. A lot of chateaus, grand vistas, infinity pools, delicate stemware and candlelit dinners in private rooms seem to be involved. Robert M. Parker Jr. changed wine criticism and wine sales in the 1980s by circumventing language altogether. Early in Ray Isle’s elephantine, hernia-inducing new guidebook, “The World in a Wineglass: The Insider’s Guide to Artisanal, Sustainable, Extraordinary Wines to Drink Now,” the author pauses to complain about the fruit-dependent tasting notes wine writers employ.

At first glance, the metal trellis adorning a public bathroom in a playground in Riverside Park may have appeared innocuous. And the park, known as the Ten Mile River Playground, was located in Harlem, a predominantly Black neighborhood — a fact that seemed to many to be beyond coincidence. Shiloh Frederick, a content creator who focuses on New York City history, first learned of the monkeys while reading “The Power Broker,” Robert A. Caro’s seminal 1974 biography of Robert Moses, the parks commissioner who transformed the city through public works projects. Mr. Moses oversaw an expansion of Riverside Park in the 1930s. Mr. Caro wrote that Mr. Moses was known for adding details that made his projects “fit in with their setting,” generally with an eye to making people feel “at home.”

MY NAME IS BARBRA, by Barbra StreisandHello, enormous. Of course Barbra Streisand’s memoir, 10 years in the making if you don’t count the chapter she scribbled in longhand in the 1990s and then lost, was going to approach “Power Broker” proportions. For one thing, she is — fits of insecurity notwithstanding — a bona fide power broker: tearing down barriers to and between Broadway, Hollywood, the recording industry and Washington, D.C., like Robert Moses on a demolition bender. For another, as Streisand writes in “My Name Is Barbra,” a 970-page victory lap past all who ever doubted, diminished or dissed her, with lingering high fives for the many supporters, she does tend to agonize over the editing process. After adding back material to her version of “A Star Is Born” for Netflix in 2018 — “I think I made it better.

In 1996, the SoHo Grand Hotel opened on West Broadway (the Mercer would open the following year).

Public pools are disappearing across America

Yet just as public pools become more important than ever, they’re disappearing from sight. Today, the city has five public pools for a population of around 640,000, ranking 89 out of the largest 100 cities in swimming pools per person, according to Trust for Public Land, an advocacy organization for public parks and land. Private pools, like these in Southern California, have replaced public pools in recent decades. When America built poolsWhile public pools are a rarer sight today, governments built enormous pools during the twentieth century. Hannah Beier/ReutersBut the loss of public pools cannot be picked up fully by private pools or non-profit groups.

There were five reported shark bites off of Long Island on Monday and Tuesday. In all of 2022, there were only eight total shark attacks reported in New York state. That many shark attacks in just two days was significant compared to last year's total. In all of 2022, there were only eight shark attacks reported in New York, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File. Shark attacks in general remain rare, according to the International Shark Attack File.

CNN —Shark patrols are ramping up off Long Island beaches after five people were bitten in two days by marine animals that are likely sharks, authorities say. Officials in Long Island’s eastern Suffolk County, where three of the attacks occurred, have increased beach patrols and are using drones to scour the water for potential threats, the Suffolk County Police Department said Tuesday. Though no sharks were seen by the girl or anyone nearby at the time of the incident, the bite was most likely from a shark, Gorman said. Also Tuesday, a 15-year-old boy was bitten on his foot by a shark while surfing off Fire Island’s Kismet Beach, Suffolk police said. Three more people were bitten on Tuesday, including a 47-year-old man swimming in chest-deep water off of Long Island’s Quogue Village Beach, local police said.

Johnson vetoed the act in part because the citizenship provision would immediately make citizens of native-born Black people while European-born immigrants had to wait several years to qualify for citizenship via naturalization (which was then open only to white people). In 1875, Congress enacted legislation that prohibited racial discrimination in the provision of public accommodations. Segregationist Southerners were not the only ones who railed against anti-discrimination laws on the grounds that they constituted illegitimate preferences for African Americans. In 1945, the New York City administrator Robert Moses inveighed against pioneering municipal anti-discrimination legislation in employment and college admissions. Displaying more anger at the distant prospect of racial quotas than the immediate reality of racial exclusions, Moses maintained that anti-discrimination measures would “mean the end of honest competition, and the death knell of selection and advancement on the basis of talent.”

The historian Robert Caro says he has built his career exploring a single grand theme: “how political power really worked.” Not how it worked in theory, or how it was supposed to work. His subjects were two men who achieved and wielded power like few others: Robert Moses and Lyndon Johnson . Moses built Lincoln Center, the West Side Highway, the F.D.R. Drive, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and many other vital pieces of the New York landscape; Johnson built the Great Society and led the U.S. into war in Vietnam. The engrossing documentary “Turn Every Page—The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb ” gives equal attention to Mr. Caro and his editor, a figure of similar renown in the publishing field, Robert Gottlieb.
